This certification program is being developed by Inland Commons, a Walla Walla nonprofit working to restore native ecosystems and build community around the land. A proposed certification framework for Walla Walla gardeners, modeled on Portland's Backyard Habitat Certification Program and adapted for the ecology and invasive plant challenges of southeastern Washington. This is a draft framework open for community input.

Certification Levels

Bronze โ€” Getting Started

For gardeners just beginning their native plant journey. Even a small start matters โ€” a single sagebrush or patch of balsamroot provides real habitat.

  • ๐Ÿ“ Layers: 2 of 5 layers present
  • ๐Ÿšซ Invasives: Class A invasives removed from your property; Class B invasives controlled in planted areas

  • ๐Ÿ’ง Stormwater: Not required
  • ๐Ÿงช Pesticides: Avoid broadcast synthetic pesticide use

Silver โ€” Committed Habitat

A significant native planting that provides real habitat value while still leaving room for a personal style garden.

Gold โ€” Native Sanctuary

A yard that functions as genuine native habitat, capable of supporting resident wildlife populations through the full annual cycle.

Platinum โ€” Restoration Garden

A yard that is a genuine restoration garden โ€” functioning as a habitat corridor and educational resource for the community.

  • ๐Ÿšซ Invasives: All invasives removed and managed with annual follow-up

Wildlife Feature Options (choose to earn credits)

Bird bath or water feature (moving water preferred)
Native bee nesting sites (bare soil patch, stem bundles, or wood-block bee house)
Bird nest box (species-appropriate: bluebird, swallow, chickadee, kestrel)
Brush pile or log pile for reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals
Leave standing dead snags or hollow logs
Native meadow patch (minimum 50 sq ft)
Reduce or eliminate outdoor night lighting
Window collision prevention (decals, screens, or external shutters)

Stormwater Practices

Rain garden planted with native species
Disconnected downspouts directed to planted area
Remove or reduce impervious surface (patio, driveway)
Mulch planted areas to retain moisture and reduce runoff
Plant native trees (canopy interception of 10โ€“30% of rainfall)
Install gravel or permeable paving
Sheet-mulch / smother lawn and replace with native planting
Swale planted with native wetland species

Education & Outreach Actions

Host a garden tour for neighbors or community group
Volunteer with a local native plant restoration event
Attend a Washington Native Plant Society event or walk

Invasive Plants to Remove

Removing invasive plants is a core requirement at every certification level โ€” it's as important as planting natives. Washington State classifies noxious weeds into three categories:

Class A โ€” Eradicate

Highest priority. Must be eradicated wherever found โ€” required by state law. Includes purple loosestrife and yellow starthistle.

Class B โ€” Control

Widespread but controllable. Control required by county. Includes spotted knapweed, Dalmatian toadflax, Russian olive, and Tree of Heaven.

Class C โ€” Monitor

Widespread and established. Control encouraged but not required. Includes common mullein and ox-eye daisy.
